HR PROBLEMS IN 2020

Employees are a company’s biggest and most expensive asset; it’s also the least scrutinized area for most business owners.  Mistakes here will not only cost organizations big money, but will also lead to employee turnover, recruitment issues and employment claims.  Which is why we are highlighting the top two HR Trends for you to watch in 2020:

According to Entrepreneur’s Organization Hiring and Regulatory Compliance are the top 2…

Hiring: Obviously making the right hire is the ultimate goal.  But success takes strategy, so put a recruiting process in place.  Think out of the box and realize that your traditional methods are not nearly as effective in today’s market.

Your talent is looking online so make sure your website and brand are at their best.  Engage in social media, highlighting your company’s culture, your involvement within the community and the “why” they would want to come and work with you.  Today’s candidates will start evaluating you before your first phone interview.

If you think they don’t, you’re wrong…

Bottom line Job seekers have the upper hand since the talent pool in which you are swimming continues to shrink.

Regulatory Compliance: is an ever changing landscape making more movement in the last ten years than in past several decades combined.

New FLSA mandates on the standard salary level, soaring sexual harassment claims and medical marijuana issues have HR departments scrambling.  Couple that with compliance changes and your going to need someone with a real eye for detail, knowledge of the laws and the band width to correctly address the situations at hand.

Which means the true need for HR help has never been higher.  There are over 1800 laws for the under 50 employees mark…over 2400 laws starting with employee 51+.

Bottom line: Your office manager and/or GM is tapped out…Do yourself a favor, find an expert, it’s money well spent.

What’s next?

If you don’t have a dedicated, SHRM certified people person, don’t panic.  Now’s the time to start exploring options including outsourcing.

There are viable alternatives to having an HR person in house.  It allows you to get experts in all areas and not just one generalist.  Regardless of which path you take, cleaning up a mess is far more costly than being proactive as the DOL is actively prosecuting businesses not following OT and new wage regulations.  To find out more about the Hiring and Regulatory Compliance Trend check out Entrepreneurs’ Organization article here.

Just remember, in the world of HR, ignorance isn’t bliss and the saying “it won’t happen to my company” is naive.

It does happen.  The question is will you be ready for it?
